Fitchburg – Continuing an annual tradition of Christmas dinner donations in Northern Worcester County, Sheriff Guy Glodis visited Fitchburg and Gardner today to hand out 300 frozen turkeys and chickens to senior citizens and low-income residents. The events are sponsored by the Worcester County Sheriff’s Department.
“Over the last two years we’ve been trying to redefine the Sheriff’s Department as a more proactive, community-oriented agency,” Sheriff Glodis stated. “One of the best ways we can do that is by lending a helping hand to those in need.” Approximately 120 Fitchburg residents attended the giveaway at the Fitchburg Senior Center. Joining the Sheriff were Mayor Dan Mylott, City Councilor Dean Tran, State Representative-elect Steve DiNatale, and City Councilor Norman Boisvert. Mayor Mylott commented on the success of the event, “It’s great to see the Sheriff’s Department so involved in the Fitchburg community. Today has put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces.” Councilor Dean Tran, who spent the bulk of the day both at the Toys for Tots and the turkey donation, voiced his support, “This is what the holidays are supposed to be about. Between Sheriff Glodis’ donation, and the Toys for Tots program, we’re hopefully making a real difference.” City Councilor, State Representative-elect Steve DiNatale was also on hand, “The Sheriff cares deeply for Fitchburg residents, and events like this reinforce his support for our area.” Councilor Norman Boisvert, active in the Sheriff’s coat drive in Fitchburg and Leominster, contributed to the effort: “Particularly now, during the holiday season, it’s important for all of us to give back. There are many less fortunate people in Fitchburg, and all we need to do is give a little time and effort.” Over 100 Gardner residents braved the cold at the Gardner Senior Center, and were greeted by Sheriff Glodis, City Councilor Josh Cormier, and City Council President Neil Janssens. Each person received a frozen roaster chicken and two dessert pies.
Ms. Joan Goodwin, Director of the Fitchburg Senior Center and Mr. Dan Novak, Director of the Gardner Council on Aging, helped coordinate each event. |
