West Boylston - In recognition of his longstanding commitment to local veterans, Worcester County Sheriff Guy Glodis was recently awarded the Massachusetts American Legion’s annual “Community Service Award”, presented by Mr. Jim Army and other state commanders at the Vernon Hill American Legion Post in Worcester in front of over 200 attendees.
“I’m both humbled and thrilled to be recognized by an organization, and the veterans they represent, that I respect so much,” Sheriff Glodis said. “Anything we do at the Sheriff’s Office to honor veterans is a small token of our appreciation for everything they’ve sacrificed for us.” Mr. Army, National American Legion Executive Committee member representing Massachusetts, stated, “It’s one thing to say you support veterans’ issues, and another entirely to stand and deliver; and Guy Glodis has delivered. As a State Representative, a State Senator, and now Sheriff, Mr. Glodis continues to be a tremendous advocate and ally for local veterans.” The American Legion cited the Sheriff’s community service projects for Posts throughout Worcester County, creation of a Veteran Service Award presented at his annual senior picnic, and particularly his new Employer Partnership Initiative with the U.S. Army Reserve as reasons for the award. The EPI, recently signed between the Sheriff and General John Cornelius, joins forces with the Army Reserve to recruit, support and retain Reservists at the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Community Service Program has completed over 35 veterans’ projects, including: cleaning and grounds work at the Fitchburg Disabled American Veterans, landscaping at Milford Veterans Services, painting and lot clean-up at the West Boylston American Legion Post, landscaping for the Main South American Legion Post veterans memorial in Worcester, and snow removal and maintenance of the Korean War Memorial in Worcester, among others. Together these projects have saved over $100,000. Sheriff Glodis was also recognized by the Vernon Hill American Legion Post in 2007 with their Citizen of the Year Award. |
