GLODIS RELEASES D.O.C. AUDIT RESULTS VOWS TO FIX PAST PROBLEMS West Boylston – After an extensive 13-member review by the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, Sheriff Guy Glodis released today the results of the most comprehensive corrections audit in Worcester County’s history. In an unprecedented move, Sheriff Glodis contacted D.O.C. Commissioner Kathleen Dennehy within the first days of his new administration to request a voluntary safety and compliance audit of all past policies, procedures and guidelines governing the Sheriff’s Office. “This audit confirms that this administration inherited the most antiquated, dilapidated and in many cases most dangerous correctional facility in the Commonwealth, and now it is time for this administration to take the bull by the horns and fix these problems,” Sheriff Glodis stated. “We will use the Auditor’s report, along with the transition team’s recommendations, as a blueprint to initiate major changes, reforms and restructuring that are desperately needed to bring improvements and modernization to this institution.” This more widespread D.O.C. audit provided a first review for many policies that have been in place for a number of years, including the inmate count process, control center operations, staff training, perimeter security, and resource inventory. The 42-page report highlighted a number of long-standing problems, including: Inadequate number of facility-wide inmate counts Outdated inmate count procedures Antiquated facility security infrastructure Understaffing of overnight shifts Inconsistent facility-wide cell search procedures Though faced with a daunting task, Sheriff Glodis has received the respect and support of his peers for his focus and determination in tackling difficult issues. Undersecretary for Criminal Justice in the Governor’s administration, Pat Bradley, stated: “I was impressed with his work as a Senator, and I’m even more impressed with his systematic approach to reforming the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office. If there is any public official capable of addressing the challenges that face the Sheriff’s Office, it’s Guy Glodis.” The second, a financial audit requested by Sheriff Glodis and conducted by the State Auditor’s Office, will be completed shortly. |
